About this topic
For some colleges, colleges form legally and economically independent units, so that such universities could also be called the Federation of Colleges. The degree of bond between college and the associated university varies.
At the universities of Cambridge, Durham and Oxford, the colleges are responsible for the social and economic interests of the students and assume many tasks which are carried out in Germany, for example, by the student services, with the provision of canteens, student residences, common rooms, libraries or sports. In addition, they also take over part of the technical support by means of tutorials. The university itself, however, is responsible for the examinations and offers the lectures. The teaching company is organized by the faculties and institutes of the university, where students and teachers from different colleges meet. Admission to the university is always associated with admission to one of the colleges. The professors of the university are Fellows at one of the colleges. They receive their professors’ title from the university, they are paid for in i.d. From college. The colleges often have a traditional focus, but take Students in a variety of disciplines – even from those from whom they do not belong – so that the college’s college is mostly cross-disciplinary. The fact that the students in the colleges are involved in small social units and are individually supervised by the tutors is regarded as an important element for the success of the study. In addition to accommodation on the old grounds of the Colleges, other buildings outside the College are also used for residential purposes. Most of the teaching rooms, libraries and laboratories are housed in the faculties of the university, although the colleges have to some extent their own libraries and lectures. For example, conferences are held here. In addition to the students, advanced students are already graduates (graduates) and postgraduates (postgraduates) to college. In addition, there are guest scientists who temporarily research and teach as Fellows in a college. Until the 19th century Fellows were not allowed to be married and formed a living community with their college members. The Fellows and Tutors are traditionally also called dons (from Latin Dominus, Lord), which is the proverbial type of the university scholar. The classical social institutions of the colleges include the food in the hall, where the members of the college are ranked according to rank, with the Fellows sitting on a platform raised by a few steps high table. Colleges also include clubs such as boat clubs, where rowing is a traditional sport.
At the University of London, the independence of the colleges even goes so far that they can almost be viewed as an independent university. On the other hand, however, there are also some colleges at colleges which take on the tasks described above but are much less self-sufficient than those presented for Oxford and Cambridge.
Above all, the economic autonomy of many colleges – they have their own employees but also property – they are partly in a better economic position than the universities to which they belong.
